I sell something people are ready to buy again and again: Specialty foods!!! I own and operate Smoky Mountain BBQ. Over the years I have created some of the most mouth-watering foods that people love to eat.
My customers keep raving about my Bar-B-Q that is so easy to prepare- I almost feel guilty!
"Catering" is one of the best businesses I know!
The secret keyword to really understanding this business is: CATERING! When you can visualize a sales day of food vending on the side of the road, it helps to think of the setup as a "catering job". Your catering trailer is your "business in a box" that contains everything you need to be self sufficient! The concession trailer is like a miniature restaurant that can serve several hundred people per day with food items as well as cool drinks!
Can you imagine, that I can do all this without a huge investment in a restaurant which would eat up my profits with high overhead costs? This is the ideal home business opportunity! I will show you many easy methods and techniques to make money, selling food.
The most profitable part of my operation is that I am MOBILE. I can be at the right locations at just the right time to make my money fast. I can be flexible with my work schedule. My BBQ smoker travels with me wherever the action is.
The flexibility it offers is unbelievable! On weekends I can serve at festivals or cater at weddings or private events. If I want to, I can work just a few festivals, or sell only on the busiest days of the week: Fridays and Saturdays. I have the freedom to expand my business and increase my income. The best part is: I am my own boss and don't have to settle for what others want to pay me at a regular job.
I just love the mobile food business! It has allowed me to have a profitable and fun career- without ever having to punch a time clock!
Every day, I meet lots of terrific people and I am happy to know that I actually help a lot of people to enjoy great food!
What is one of the best ways to get started?
Like with any substantial business, the mobile food business requires some special "tools of the trade"... Right now, during the recession, is a good time to look around in your community for concession equipment. Concession carts, cars, vans and trailers are all great money makers if you use them to their fullest potential. Good deals can be found every day on internet sites like eBay or Craigslist. I see used equipment sell for a fraction of their new prices and most cooking equipment can be considered an excellent investment opportunity that will keep on making cash money for years to come!
Of course you can also order any kind of concession equipment brand new from the manufacturer or can even have it custom built to your specifications. Naturally, it comes with a hefty price tag! Most of us don't have that kind of money to get started... I for sure did not have it back then and I will show you how I saved a lot of money and build my own concession trailer. It makes the heart of my operation- a small business that I can work out of on a daily basis.
In many towns, concession equipment can also be found for rent or for lease. This is a good option to consider for emergencies, one time events or other rare occasions. But as a general rule, equipment should always be purchased outright, when it is used it more often than 3 times per year.
Find your niche in the Mobile Food Business
Depending on your sales menu, the equipment you need can be very basic and cheap to keep your investment capital low. A hot dog cart can be very profitable as a family business, when set up at the right locations in town or at events. Hot dog carts can be one of the easiest ways to get started as they can be purchased for less than $5000 in many cases. Another good niche to get into is the Kettle Corn business. Less than $3000 buys you a gas fired kettle on a trailer and a nice display tent.
For even more earning potential, a concession trailer is hard to beat. As a true "kitchen on wheels" it can go anywhere the action is! A concession trailer gives you flexible working hours where you can decide how many days per week you want to work. One of my collegues only works Saturday and Sunday and takes the rest of the week off! He can pull this off by selling foods with a high perceived value and high profit margins.
All concession equipment pays for itself within just a few weeks of using it! It is paid for by the equivalent of $1600 dollars that each adult spends per year on average on food and drinks away from home!!!
The amazing Concession Trailer
At the heart of an advanced multi-purpose mobile food business is the trailer that houses the operation. This structure must do a number of jobs and the success of the business is directly linked to these functions.
First of all it will have to be mobile and able to be towed to where the people are. Or it can be pulled to and set up at a semi-permanent location and wait for customers to come to it. A part of a concession trailer will be dedicated to food preparations and storage. Another part of the trailer will function as a customer service area and facilitate sales transactions. Next to providing physical shelter for you and your equipment, the trailer will feature utilities just like any kitchen. Power and gas are needed to provide light, heat and cooling of food items and the trailer interior. Hot and cold water are necessary for hand and dish washing.
These utilities are a vital factor to maintaining a smooth work flow of the serving and sales process. Only high quality, low maintenance equipment should be used on board of the trailer, so it is easy to keep clean and functional.
When you are comparing new and used trailers from different manufacturers you will find many different designs and price categories. There are big differences in the construction quality as far as materials are concerned. Modern trailers are built with space age materials that have superior strength and most of all save weight.
Always remember to do whatever you can to KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY! This is the fastest way to build a PROFITABLE BUSINESS for the future!
